NHS-Funded Eye Tests

An NHS-funded eye test at home depends on two things: being entitled to an NHS sight test, and being unable to leave home unaccompanied because of a physical or mental illness or disability. We check both for you as part of our booking process.

Private Eye Tests

If you do not qualify for a funded home visit — including if you are entitled to an NHS sight test but able to get to a practice — our standard home eye test fee is just £60.

NHS Eligibility

A home eye test is free on the NHS when both of these apply.

1. You are entitled to an NHS sight test — for example you:

• Are aged 60 or over
• Are under 16, or under 19 and in full-time education
• Have been diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma
• Receive certain benefits

2. You are unable to leave home unaccompanied

The NHS funds a sight test at home for people who cannot leave home on their own because of a physical or mental illness or disability.

If you are entitled to an NHS sight test but could get to a practice, you are still very welcome to be seen at home — our private home visit fee is £60. We check all of this with you when you book, so you will know the cost before we visit.

NHS Optical Vouchers

If you're eligible for an NHS-funded eye test, you may also qualify for an NHS optical voucher to help with the cost of your glasses or contact lenses. This includes:

• Children under 16 or under 19 and in full-time education
• Adults who receive certain benefits or tax credits
• People with complex prescriptions

Voucher values range from approximately £39 to £215, depending on your prescription. Our optician will explain your entitlement during your eye test.
